RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (WZZM/KMIR) — President and First Lady Betty Ford may have called Grand Rapids their hometown, but their final home was a custom-built house in the California desert.

Now the First Couple’s house is for sale. The asking price is almost $1.7 million.

After the presidency, the Fords retired to Rancho Mirage, an upscale suburb of Palm Springs. They had a house built on a golf course in 1978.

The home includes five bedroom, six bathrooms and a swimming pool.

“President Ford designed the pool because he would swim twice a day,” says Realtor Nelda Linsk.

The home also includes an extensive security system. Secret Service agents lived on the property in a separate house that once belonged to actress Ginger Rogers.

The home sale also includes some of the furniture to Fords had in their home.

President Ford died in December 2006.  Betty Ford died last July.
